One of them is the 64 Yogini temple located at Bhedaghat in Jabalpur. Sixty-four yoginis (statues) are seen guarding this temple even today. Once famous all over the world for the practice of Tantra, this temple was also the center of time calculation, referred to as Golki Math. Sculptures dating back to the 10th century
Chausath Yogini Temple is circular in shape and one can spot a beautifully carved temple in the middle. Also, there lies a Shiva-Parvati idol in the adytum of this temple. According to Historians, this statue is very rare. There is no such idol in any other place in the country with an adornment riding on Taurus i.e. Nandi. Dr. RK Sharma is of the opinion that this temple dates back to the tenth century. The temple is based on 81 triangular angles, at each angle of which Yogini was established. In fact, Sapta or Ashta Matrikas were also established at this shrine during the Gupta period. The Gaurishankar temple was built here in the 12th century by Queen Gosaldevi of Gujarat.

Construction of the Temple
The entire structure which is made of heavy stones is located in the heart of Chausath Yogini Temple and built at a height of about 250 meters. It is only three decades ago that the Pucca stairs have been constructed here. More often than not, people are left stunned at imagining how it is possible for a man to carve on such a high hill. Each idol has its own distinct aura and specialty. Although most of the sculptures were demolished during the Mughal era, the ruins of these century-old sculptures continue to show the depth of the art of the bygone era.

Guard of God
As we all know, Mahadev is considered to be well versed in the theatrical genre, whereas mother Gauri Lashya is considered to be the presiding deity of dance. Sixty-four Yoginis were also proficient in various dance forms including Maran, Mohan, Hypnosis, Uchtan, and Vashikaran. They are believed to originate from Mahishasur Mardini Maa Durga, so she plays her role in the operation of the universe according to the wishes of Mother Shakti. It is believed that Yoginis dance till date in Chausath Yogini temple thereby keeping a watch on Shiva and Parvati.

Rajkumar Gupta, a historian says that Golkimath had the title of a university and it used to be a major center of period calculations. Students from all over the world came here to study. Golkimath University had branches of Mathematics, Astrology, Sanskrit literature, and tantra science. Out of these, only the Tantra Sadhana Kendra Chausath Yogini Temple built in the Kalchuri period exists but buildings that house the rest of the branches do not.
