The festival of Chhath Puja is celebrated every year six days after the festival of Diwali.  According to this, in this year i.e. 2021, Chhath Puja is falling on Wednesday, November 10.

According to the belief, Chhath Puja and fast are kept for the happiness, health and prosperity of the family.  Some of the methods of worshiping this fast of four days are very difficult, one of the most prominent of which is the Nirjala fast of 36 hours.

This Monday, November 08, the festival of Chhath Puja will start from Nahay Khay.  There will be Kharna on Tuesday, November 9.  Then on Wednesday, 10 November, the setting sun will have to be offered Arghya and on the last day of this festival i.e. on Thursday, 11 November, Chhath Puja will end by offering arghya to the rising sun.

This festival is celebrated especially in North India.  In this, worship of Chhathi Mai and Lord Surya is done.  Let us know what we do on this festival.

  •  When is which festival:

In Chhath Puja, there is a practice of worshiping the sixth Maya and offering Arghya to the Sun God.  On the day of Chhath, women stand in a river, pond or reservoir and worship the Sun by offering them Arghya.  This festival lasts for 4 days.  This festival will start with Nahay Khay on 8th November.  Kharna will be held on 9th November.  Sandhya Arghya will be offered to the Sun on 10th November and Arghya will be offered to the rising Sun in the morning on 11th November.

  • Vrat is kept for the happiness of children:

Women keep Chhath fast to protect their children and seek blessings of peace and happiness for the whole family.  It is believed that the sixth Maya gives a boon to childless women who observe a fast on this day.  This fast is kept for about 36 hours.

  • 36 hours fast:

The festival of Chhath begins with a bath, in which cleanliness and pure vegetarian food are only followed.  After this install the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya murti in the house, and worshipped them.  Kharna is held on the second day.  In Kharna, women wear clean clothes and apply vermilion from the nose to the forehead.  After fasting for the whole day, in the evening, prepare prasad by making sati's rice and jaggery kheer on a wooden stove.  After worshiping, women consume the same and it is given as prasad to other members of the house.  Only after consuming this food, the fasting of 36 hours of fasting starts for the fasting women.  People believe that Chhathi Mai enters the house only after Kharna Puja is performed.  The third day and the fourth day are the most important in which Sandhya and Usha Arghya are offered.

  • Sandhya Arghya:

The festival of Chhath Puja remains on the day of Shashthi.  It is important to offer Arghya to the Sun in the evening on this day. Kartik Shukla's Shashthi is held on this day, On this Shashti, in the evening time, the Sun God is offered Arghya and duly worshiped.  On this day Surya lives with his wife Pratyusha.  That is why Pratyusha gets the benefit of offering Arghya.  It is said that worshiping the Sun in the evening brings prosperity in life.  In the evening, the pooja soup is decorated by placing thekua, rice laddus and some fruits in a bamboo basket and then Arghya is offered to the Sun and during this time the Chhathi Maiya is also worshiped by offering water and milk to the Sun with a soup filled with prasad.  After this, songs of Chhathi Mata are sung during the night and the fast story is heard.

  • Usha Arghya:

Usha Arghya means that on this day women reach the river Ghat before sunrise in the morning and offer Arghya to the rising sun.  On the second day of Shashti, on Saptami, women end the fast by offering arghya to the rising sun, which is called Parana.  On the last day, Arghya is offered to the Sun at Varuna Vela.  This Arghya is offered to Surya's wife Usha.  By doing this all the wishes are fulfilled.  After the puja is over, the fasting women complete the fast by drinking sherbet of raw milk and eating some prasad, which is called Parana.  It is the concluding day of Chhath festival.
