The way Vikram Samvat has 1.Chaitra 2.Vaishakh 3.Jyeshtha 4.Ashadh 5.Shravan 6.Bhadrapada as the names of the months. In the same way there are Chandramas too in every month of Vikram Samvat.

Shukla Paksha (Sudi) - The dates from Pratipada to Purnima after Amavasya are called Shukla Paksha, which implies - That the rising moon after Amavasya is indicative of Shukla Paksha till the full moon.

Krishna Paksha (Badi) - The dates from Poornima to Amavasya are called Krishna Paksha. Which means here that the receding moon after the full moon is indicative of Krishna Paksha till Amavasya.

There are some dates in every month, namely

  • Saptami
  • Ashtami
  • Navami
  • Dashmi

If we differentiate between the full moon and the new moon then we will find Purnima comes in Shukla Paksha while Amavasya falls in Krishna Paksha. Poornima comes after Amavasya. When the moon takes its full shape. While Amavasya comes after the full moon. When the size of the moon starts to get smaller, fasting on full moon day is also done. While it is good to donate on Amavasya, it is forbidden to do auspicious work on this day, while it is good to do all auspicious work on full moon day.
