Margashirsha month holds great importance in the Hindu religion. Every day of this month has religious significance. Amavasya and the full moon of Margashirsha month are special. This year's Margashirsha Amavasya is on 04 December and after about 15 days there will be Margashirsha Purnima. On the day of Margashirsha Purnima, the story of Lord Satyanarayan is heard, Mata Lakshmi is worshipped and the moon is also worshipped. It is Margashirsha month, so worshiping Lord Krishna on this full moon also has special benefits. According to the Panchang, the full moon date of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsh month will start from 07:24 am on Saturday, 18th December. The full moon date is valid till 10.05 am on the next day, 19 December, Sunday. In such a situation, Margashirsha Purnima 2021 is on 19 December. According to the Puranas, this month is referred to as ‘Maasonam Margashirshoham’ inferring that this is the most auspicious month.  
According to the experts, in the Pradosh Kaal, on Margashirsha Purnima, Lord Dattatreya was embodied on Earth, and later, this day is celebrated as his birth anniversary.

Rituals during Margashirsha Purnima

• On this auspicious day, believers wake up very early in the morning and perform the ceremonious bath with the roots of the Tulsi plant. During this, one must chant ‘Om Namo Narayana’ or the ‘Gayatri mantra’. It is trusted that taking a holy dip in the Ganga River on Margashirsha Purnima will prove beneficial as it is a holy act.
• Fasting is also practiced on this day, it is believed that it will help the devotees to please their ‘Ishta Devatas’. On this auspicious day, one must recite the ‘Satyanarayana Katha’ as it has the supreme power to remove all obstacles in life and acquire success.
• Devotees spent their entire day fasting, worshiping Lord Vishnu with immense love and affection, performing ‘yagas, bhajans, and kirtans. The distribution of sweets or commonly known as “prasad” took place at the end of aarti.
• Offering charities and donations on Margashirsha Purnima gives 32 times more benefits as compared to any other day, therefore it is named ‘Battissi Purnima’.

Margashirsha month is considered auspicious in the traditional Hindu calendar. As per the Hindu religious scriptures, this month is also denoted as ‘Magsar’, ‘Agahan’ or ‘Agrahayan’. On this auspicious day, it is believed that taking a holy dip in the River Yamuna can help a young girl get his desired life partner. On Margashirsha Purnima, Lord Vishnu is worshipped as ‘Narayana’.
