The worship of Takshak Nag, who is called the lord of the snake caste, is considered very important on Panchami  Nagpanchami, which falls in the Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. The fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month is celebrated as the holy festival of Nagpanchami. On this day, there is a law of special worship in the major temples associated with the snake deity of the country. Takshak pilgrimage has special significance in the main holy pilgrimage associated with serpents. Takshak is considered to be the lord of the entire snake race among the eight major serpents residing in Hades. Worshiping them on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of any month removes the obstacles and vices. It is believed that by worshiping, Rudrabhishek etc., at Takshak Tirtha in the month of Sawan, not only a particular person but even his descendants become free from the sin of snake bite. Where is Takshak Tirtha located: 

The holy Takshak shrine associated with serpents is situated on the banks of Yamuna in Prayag, which is called the king of pilgrimages. Mythology related to Takshak shrine 

Once the Ashwini Kumars, after suffering a lot on Mount Kishkindha, made Rasraj of Parad and kept it in the cave there and went away. After this, when Ashwini Kumar again went there to take Rasraj, he found the Parad pot dry. After this Ashwini Kumar reached heaven and informed about this incident to Indra, the king of the gods. Then Indra asked them to find the thief so that they could punish him. When Takshak Nag came to know about this whole incident, he came from Hades and started living on the Yamuna bank of Prayagraj. After searching a lot, when Takshak Nag could not be found, Devguru Brihaspati revealed its secret and told him that Takshak Nag has made his abode in Prayagraj, the king of pilgrimages and he always keeps his meditation there in Lord Madhav, like this It is impossible to kill him. After knowing this the gods became calm. It is believed that from then till today Takshak Nag resides on this holy shrine. It is also believed that after being driven away from Mathura by Lord Krishna, Takshak Nag took refuge in Takshakeshwar Kund located on the banks of Yamuna in Prayagraj. The story related to Takshak Teerth is described in Chapter 92 of Shri Prayag Mahatmya Shatadhyayi. 

  

Religious Significance of Takshak Tirtha: 

According to Vishnu Purana, Takshak Teerth is considered to give the meritorious results of all pilgrimages and removes all kinds of poison. According to Padma Purana, there is a lot of importance of worshiping and worshiping Lord Shiva on the Panchami Takshak Teerth of Shukla Paksha of every month. On the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha, Aghan and Shravan month, huge crowd of worshipers gather at Takshak Tirtha. Shiva devotees who come here believe that by taking a bath in Takshak Kund located on the banks of Yamuna and worshiping Lord Takshakeshwar, chanting and donating etc., one gets rid of all kinds of defects and obstacles related to snakebite etc. It is believed that by worshiping Lord Shiva on these holy dates, worshiping Lord Shiva, doing Rudrabhishek etc., the worshiper of Shiva gets happiness, wealth and good fortune.
