The temple is located on the seventh peak of the Tirumala hills, Venkatadri, on Sri Swami Pushkarini’s southern banks, which is a water tank that is considered holy. Thus, the temple is also known by the name of “Temple of Seven Hills”. Dravidian style of architecture is primarily used for the construction of the temple and the construction is believed to have begun at the start of the 4th century CE. This temple happens to be the richest temple on the planet, when overall wealth and donations received are considered. 50000 – 100000 pilgrims visit the temple daily, and this number rises up to around 500000 pilgrims a day, during special occasions and festivals like the annual Brahmotsavam. This act makes this temple the first most visited place of worship in the entire world. Around 27.3 million adherents visited the Tirupati Balaji temple in 2016 alone. This temple is also the most famous Vaishnavite temple in the world.

Pallava queen Samwai is believed to have made the first endowment to the temple, in 966 CE, donating many jewels and large lands. The revenue from these lands were to be used for celebrating major festivals and occasions in the temple, as per the queen’s wishes. However, the temple obtained much of its current wealth and glory under the Vijayanagara empire, due to massive donations of gold and diamonds. The king of the Vijayanagara Empire, Emperor Krishnadevaraya visited the temple many times, donating largely each time. One of these donations in 1517 allowed for the gilding of the inner shrine, Ananda Nilayam. After Vijayanagara Empire’s downfall, leaders and rulers from the Kingdom of Mysore and Gadwal Samsthanam continued donations and visits to the temple.
During the 19th century, the British East India Company become responsible for the temple’s management, who accorded the temple a special status, whereby they were to avoid interference in the activities of the temple. After the East India Company’s management, the temple came under the control of the Mahants of Hathiramji Muth. After six generations under the Mahants, the temple came under TTD administration in 1933.
