Saphala Ekadashi Fast (30 December, Thursday)
As the name suggests, the Ekadashi fasting which brings success in all tasks is called Saphala Ekadashi. The fast of Saphala Ekadashi is observed on the day of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Paush month. This fast has been counted as the best fast among all Ekadashi fasts. It is believed that fasting on this Ekadashi fulfils all the wishes of the worshiper and gives him immense divine grace. The importance of fasting on this Ekadashi has been told in the Puranas. There is a law for Lord Narayan's fast on this day.
Pradosh Fast (31st December, Friday)
Just as there is a practice prevalent to worship Lord Vishnu on Ekadashi in every month, similarly there is a practice prevalent to observe Pradosh fast in the evening before Trayodashi of every month. Lord Shiva is worshiped   on this day. It is believed that worshiping him on this day brings his blessings and the wishes of the worshipers are fulfilled.
Monthly Shivratri Fast (January 1, Saturday)
Shivaratri fast is observed on the Trayodashi of each paksha. This fast dedicated to Lord Shiva on this day is said to fulfil all kinds of wishes. The entire scriptures and the masters of many religions have described this Shivaratri fast as the best. The worshiper attains salvation by this fast. The worshiper who observes the fast should observe this fast from early morning till the night of Turdashi. Lord Shankar should be worshiped during all the four phases of the night and "Shiva Mahimna Stotra" and 'Om Namah Shivaya' should be recited again and again.
Paush Amavas (January 2, Sunday)
In the scriptures, the day of Amavasya is said to be the best for performing Shradh and Tarpan for ancestors. There has also been a discussion of attaining special merit by bathing in Punyasalila rivers after the tarpan. Purnima and Amavasya are counted as special dates in Hindu scriptures. The Moon is located below the Sun in the solar system of the sky. On the new moon day, the white part of the moon remains towards the sun, so the bright rays of the sun reach that part of the lunar system where the ancestors are believed to reside. For this reason, the offerings and donations of ancestors on the new moon day are said to be very important on this day. The Krishna Paksha of Paush month is also ending on the day of Paush Amavas. Those who do not do paternal work on the new moon day, they should not do shaving etc.
