History
The tradition of yoga practice is going on since ancient times. The importance of yoga can be easily known through ancient evidence. Signs of Yoga are visible everywhere in ancient India. The presence of yoga is also abundantly present in folk traditions, Indus Valley Civilization, Vedic and Upanishads, Buddhist and Jain traditions, philosophy, epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana, Shaiva, Vaishnava and Tantric traditions. Sun was given utmost importance in the Vedic period. In this, the practise of Surya Namaskar was also invented.

Pranayama was a part of daily rituals in the Sanatan tradition. Yoga was being practised since pre-Vedic times, the great sage Maharishi Patanjali, through his Yoga Sutras, systematized and codified the then existing practices of Yoga, and its meaning and knowledge related to it. After Patanjali, many sages and yoga gurus contributed a lot to the preservation and development of yoga through their literature. Historical evidence of the existence of yoga is seen in the pre-Vedic period 2700 BC and thereafter till the period of Patanjali. The main sources of information about yoga practices and related literature during this period are the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Smritis, the teachings of Buddhism, Jainism, the Panini, the epics and the Puranas.

Types of Yoga:
  • Hatha yoga:
 The Sanskrit word "Hatha" is a multipurpose word for all the physical postures of Yoga. Hatha yoga refers to all the styles of Ashtanga, Iyengar, etc. It is based on physical exercise. In this, Shatkarma, Asana, Mudra, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dhyana and Samadhi are considered as seven parts of Hatha Yoga, through this yoga awakening of Kundalini power becomes possible.
  • Karma yoga:
Living life by living in action is the concept of Karma Yoga. This yoga is also a gesture to be done for the good of others. The path of service is through selfless action. Exists as a tradition in Hindu monasteries or ashrams. • The concept of Karma Yoga is also present in the Gita by God
  • Bhakti Yoga:
To establish the way of manifestation and love of God through devotional rituals. Forms of this path include regular prayer, chanting, kirtan, singing, dancing, ceremonies and celebrations. The period from the 14th century to the 15th century has been the period of Bhakti when Bhakti Yoga was present at its peak. Be it Surdas or Krishna Das, Bhakti Yoga was given the main place in his song.
  • Jnana Yoga:
It is the path of wisdom and knowledge and involves the study of sacred texts, intellectual discussion, philosophical discussion, and introspection. Socrates was a knowledge yogi, as are modern yoga scholars such as David Frawley and Ravi Ravindra.
  • Raja Yoga:
It is also known as Rajasik and Shahi Yoga, which signifies the journey towards personal enlightenment. This path involves balancing the three main yoga types, karma, bhakti and jnana, while integrating the eight limbs of yoga.
