Folktale History According to folklore, the cave was discovered in 1850 by a shepherd named Buta Malik, who was a Muslim. He was grazing his cattle in the mountain when a Sufi saint gave him a bag of coal, which turned out to be gold. He went back to thank the saint but found the cave and the Shiva linga. Earlier the descendants of Buta Malik were the custodians of the dargah. The priests of Dashnami Akhara and Purohit Sabha Mattan looked after the holy site, but later the Amarnath Shrine Board was formed to look after the affairs of the temple, which is headed by the Governor of the state.

Lord Shiva is in the form of a Shivalinga in the Amarnath cave temple.

Shivling is formed due to the freezing of water droplets falling on the floor from the ceiling of the Amarnath mountain cave seated. Parvati and Ganesh are also present here in two smaller forms.
It is mentioned in the ancient Hindu texts of Mahabharata and Puranas that the lingam represents Shiva. According to religious beliefs, it is said that the lingam increases and decreases with the side of the Moon. According to religious beliefs, this is the place where Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his divine consort Parvati. The book Rajatarangini refers to Krishnantha or Amarnath. It is believed that, in the 11th century AD, Queen Suryamati gifted the Trishul, Banalinga and other sacred symbols to this temple. There is a detailed reference to the pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave temple at Rajavalipataka initiated by Prajayabhata. Apart from this, mention of this pilgrimage is found in many other ancient texts.
According to legend, sage Bhrigu was the first to discover Amarnath.A long time ago, it is believed that the valley of Kashmir was submerged under water, and sage Kashyap channeled it through a series of rivers and streams. As a result, when the water drained out, Bhrigu was the first to see Shiva at Amarnath. After this, when people heard about the lingam, it became the abode of Shiva for all and became a place of pilgrimage,Which is traditionally visited by lakhs of people in July and August during the month of Sawan.According to the researchers and according to the belief of the local people, the Gadaria community was the first to discover the Amarnath cave and saw the first glimpse of Shiva. On the other hand, the arguments of religious tales and historians appear somewhat different from this. Whatever be the truth, one thing is real that this place of devotion, faith and love is going to make everyone's heart happy.
