The story behind celebrating Bhai Dooj

According to mythology, Yama and Yamuna are the children of Lord Surya and his wife Sandhya. After the marriage of sister Yamuna, Yamraj went to his sister’s house on the day of Bhai Dooj. On this occasion, Yamuna honored him and fed Yamraj with a tilak on his forehead. Pleased with this behavior of his sister, Yamraj asked sister Yamuna to ask for a boon.

On this, Yamuna Ji said, give me this boon that on this day, any brother who goes to his sister’s house and gets tilak applied and eats food from his sister’s hand will not be afraid of premature death. Yamraj accepted this and blessed his sister. It is believed since then tradition of celebrating Bhai Dooj started.

According to another legend related to this festival, on the day of Bhai Dooj, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura and returned to Dwarka. Then Lord Krishna’s sister Subhadra had welcomed him and wished him long life by applying tilak on his forehead.
