So today we will tell you about such a temple in DevbhoomiUttarakhand, which is believed to be built by the Pandavas in one night. This temple is considered to be the holy place of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The name of this temple is Bineshwar Mahadev Temple (Binsar).

According to folktales, a long time back, a rock was present here and a rural cow used to pour her milk on the rock which appeared as if the rock was drinking the milk.
Bineshwar Mahadev Temple (Binsar) is a popular Hindu Temple. The temple is located about 20km away from Ranikhet inDevbhoomiUttarakhand. The holy temple of Bineshwar (Binsar) Mahadev is located among the thick deodars. With its divine and spiritual environment, the place is also popular for its unique beauty of nature.
At a height of about 5,500 ft., on the serene coast of Kunj river, is situated the magnificent Binsar Mahadev Temple. The temple, located 2480m above sea level or surface, is surrounded by lush green deodars and other forests.
It is said that Bineshwar (Binsar) Mahadev was later rebuilt in the 9th/10th century during the Chand Vansh and therefore it has been an important religious place in Uttarakhand for ages. Along with the statues of Shri Ganesh, Har Gauri and Maheshmardini, it is also known for its architecture.
Apart from its religious significance, the temple is also known for its impressive architectural excellence. Anyone willing to visit the temple can go through the popular Binsar wildlife sanctuary. The Maheshmardini statue present here is engraved in the ‘Nagrilipi’text dated back to the 9th century.

It is believed that this temple was built by King Pithu in memory of his father Bindu and so this temple is also known as Bindeshwar Temple. Surrounded by deodar, pine and oak forests, this temple holds a separate place in the state and is worth visiting.
There is not much knowledge about the history of Bineshwar (Binsar) Mahadev Temple. Still, some of the researchers tried to find out the facts and myths about this temple.
Bineshwar (Binsar) Mahadev Temple is popular for itsarchaeological importance and vegetation. Due to the availability of limited documents of the temple, different people tell different stories which reveal its discovery.
BELIEFS OF BINSAR MAHADEV TEMPLE
  • In relation to the temple, it is believed that in a Karoli village near Sauni Binsar, lived a 65-year-old man who had no child of his own. A monk once appeared in his dream and instructed him that amidst the bushes on the bank of river Kunj, there is a Shivalinga. Build a temple and establish the Shivalinga. The aged man followed the orders and built a temple. He was later blessed with a baby boy.
Earlier, there was a small temple established. In 1959, under the leadership of Brahmleen Naga Baba Mohan Giri, associated with Shri Panch Dashnaam Juna Akhara, the renovation of this grand temple was started. Akhand Jyoti has been lighted since 1970 in this temple.
  • According to a different belief, earlier in the Sauni village near Binsar, lived the Manihar people. One of their cows used to graze in the Binsar region daily.
The cow was out of milk every timeshe reached home. One day, a Manihar followed the cow. He saw that there was a rock in the forest upon which the cow left her milk and that rock was drinking it.
The infuriated Manihar pushed the cow aside and hit therock with the reverse side of an axe. Due to this, the rock started bleeding. A Saint appeared in the dream of Manihar that night and ordered them to abandon the village. They left the village and went to Ramnagar.

  • By Air: The nearest airport to Almora isat Pantnagar, the seat of a famous agricultural university, about 125KMs from Ranikhet and 127 KMs From Almora. After Pantnagar, one has to travel by road.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is at Kathgodam situated around 90 KMs away. Kathgodam is connected by rail directly with Delhi, the capital of India, Lucknow, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh, Dehradun the capital of the state of Uttarakhand.
  • By Road: Binsar Mahadev Temple is well connected through road network. Since air and rail connectivity in Uttarakhand is limited, road network is the best and easily available transport option. You can either drive to Ranikhet and than Soni Binsar or drive to Ramnagar and than Soni Binsar or hire a cab/taxi to reach Soni Binsar, Ranikhet from Delhi or any other nearby cities.
