History :-
The Brihadeshwara Temple is a splendid example of Chola architecture, which was built in a span of only 5 years (during 1004 AD and 1009 AD) during the reign of the Chola ruler Maharaja Rajaraja I. It is also named as Rajarajeshwara Temple after his name. Rajaraja I was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, due to which he built many Shiva temples, one of which is the Brihadeshwara temple. This huge temple was counted among the largest structures of its time.

Architecture :-
Brihadeshwara Temple is a building dedicated to Lord Shiva and here he has named the Lord as Raja Rajeswaram Udayar after himself. This temple is built of granite and mostly large blocks of stone have been used in it, these boulders are not available nearby so they were brought from a distant place. The temple is built in a spreading interior which is 240.90 meters long (east-west) and 122 meters wide (north-south) and has three simple arched entrances on each side with the gopuram on the east side and the third at the rear. is on the edge. Features
A huge dome-shaped shikhara is octagonal and is perched on a single block of granite and measures 7.8 meters in circumference and weighs 80 tons. Upa pitta and adishthanam are common to all axially placed units such as ardhamah and mukha mandapam and are connected to the main sanctum sanctorum but the way to reach here is through the ardha mandapam from north-south direction, which has huge steps. . The foundry plinth is richly filled with inscriptions of the builder ruler describing his many achievements, sacred works and organizational events associated with the temple. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, the Brihat Linga is 8.7 meters high. The walls have huge pictorial representations of them and the inner passage depicts Shiva as Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Bhikshatana, Virabhadra Kalantaka, Natesh, Ardhanarishvara and Alingana. The frescoes in the lower part of the wall on the inside are fine examples of the Chola and their later periods.

Importance of temple :-
Brihadisvara Temple can be seen from any corner of Tanjore. Its huge campus is the main centre. Dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, this temple also houses a huge idol of Nandi, the ride of the Lord. Rajaraja I was a follower of Shiva, he also received the title of Shivpadasekhar. According to his religious tolerance, he got the Rajarajeshwara Temple or Brihadeshwara Temple built in Tanjore and many Buddhist statues were also built. The Chola rulers named this temple as Rajarajeshwara, but the Maratha rulers who attacked Tanjore gave the temple the name Brihadisvara.

The Brihadeshwar temple is an unmatched specimen of architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, music, jewelery and engraving in stone and copper. The Sanskrit and Tamil inscriptions inscribed in its inscriptions are excellent examples of calligraphy. A long series of stone inscriptions inscribed in beautiful letters around this temple depict the immense greatness of the personality of the ruler. The main feature of the construction art of this temple is that the shadow of its dome does not fall on the earth. Swarna Kalash is situated on its summit which amazes everyone. On seeing the grand Shivling installed in the temple, the name Brihadeshwar seems to be meaningful. Upon entering the temple, there is a gopuram i.e. a square pavilion inside the door and a huge idol of Nandi ji is installed on the platform. This statue of Nandi is the second largest statue of Nandi built in a single stone in India. Due to the excellence of this temple, it has got the place of World Heritage by UNESCO
