It is believed that on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi Lord Vishnu goes to sleep for the next four month on Shesha Naga- the cosmic serpent. In other words Lord Vishnu goes to Ksheer Sagar for Yoga Nidra. In common parlance, it is called the sleep of God, that is why Ekadashi is known as Devshayani Ekadashi or Harishayani and Padmanabha Ekadashi. During this phase, known as the Chaturmas, the responsibility of maintaining the world will be on Mahadev. No auspicious works are not done in Chaturmas like marriages initiation, planetary entry, yajna, yagyopaveet sanskar does not take place between these 4 months. It is believed that God is in sleep in such a situation, after doing auspicious work, they do not get their blessings. This year Devshayani Ekadashi falls on 20th July, 2021.
Benefits of fasting
By observing a fast on Devshayani Ekadashi, one gets freedom from all kinds of sins and all the wishes of a person are fulfilled. It is believed fasting on Ekadashi leads to salvation after death.

Method of worshipping
Get a bath before sunrise and then light a diya or lamp in the temple of your house. Anoint Lord Vishnu with Ganga water. Offer tulsi dal and flowers to Lord. Perform Vishnu aarti and also worship Goddess Laxmi on this day. Finally, offer bhog to God. Keep in mind to just offer satvik food and must include tulsi in the bhog. It is believed that without Tusli, lord Vishnu doesn't accept the bhog. Offer yellow clothes, yellow flowers, yellow sandalwood to Lord Vishnu. Decorate conch shell, chakra, mace, and the Padma in his hands. The next day feed a brahmin and give dakshina and donate to the needy as much as possible. On Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped and praised in the night and before one's sleep, the Lord should be put to sleep.
