According to Hindu Panchang, Gangaur is worshiped on Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. On this day, Married women worship Gangaur Mata i.e., Mother Parvati for their husband’s long life.
Just as a large number of women in North India wish for the long life of their husband or wish for the desired groom, they fast in the month of Saawan on Sawan Teej. In the same way in Rajasthan, Women also observe Gangaur Vrat for the protection of their husband. Like Teej, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshiped in Gangaur too. The festival of Gangaur is celebrated every year on Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. This year, Gangaur will be worshipped on Thursday, 15 April.
Fasting is done secretly from husband
However, the biggest feature of this fast is that Married women keep this fast hidden from their husband (Does not tell husband about fast). The husband is not told about the fast and even the offerings of worship are not given by the women to the husband. The fast of Gangaur is especially observed by women of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and on this day Gangaur Mata i.e., Mata Parvati is worshipped with rituals. This is how Gangaur is worshipped
According to mythological beliefs, Goddess Parvati goes to her maternal home on the second day of Holi and after 8 days Lord Shiva comes to take her back, so this festival starts from the day of Holi i.e., Pratipada of Chaitra month. From this day, Married women and virgin girls worship the clay by making clay Shiva ji i.e., Gan and Mata Parvati i.e., Gaur. After this, Gangaur Teej is worshipped on Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month.During these 17 days, the women wake up every morning and pick the flowers and give them a sprinkling of milk from those coaches to the Gangaur Mata. Then on the second date of Chaitra Shukla Paksha, go near a river, pond and give water to its worshipped Gangaur. Gangaur is immersed on the evening of Tritiya of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. On the day of Gangaur fast, Married women fast for the long life of their husband and virgin girls for the attainment of a good groom.
