Every month of the Hindu Calendar observes a Purnima. This day is believed to be special for worshipping Lord Vishnu. In Hinduism, just like the Amavasya, Purnima also holds a special significance.

Jyeshtha Purnima is also believed to have a special position among the 12 Purnimas a year. Jyeshtha Purnima is one of the 7 major Purnimas in the year. The Purnima of Jyeshtha month will be observed on 24th June, Thursday of this year. This day is also called Jeth Purnima or Jeth Purnamasi.

What is so special this year?
According to resources, the day of Purnima is believed to special for worshipping Lord Vishnu. This time the Purnima of Jyeshtha Month is on Thursday. Vishnu is considered to be the Lord of Thursday and this Purnima is also to be observed on Thursday which makes this Jyeshtha Purnima so important and special this year.

It is being said that on such an auspicious day, worshipping Lord Vishnu will not only help the devotee to get rid of all the problems but also will get the special blessings of Lord Vishnu. The Sun and The Moon will also be placed in Gemini and Scorpio signs respectively.

Like other Purnimas, on Jyeshtha Purnima too, it is said to take a bath in the sacred sea or watercourse, keep fast and do charity. But Jyeshtha Purnima is considered to be more significant than other Purnimas.

In relation to the day of Jyeshtha Purnima, bath, charity and fast are believed to reap auspicious results. In some places, Vat Purnima Vrath(Fast) and Kabirdas Jayanti is celebrated on this day.

According to Hindu Panchang, the day of Jyeshtha Purnima is on thursday, 24th June. This is said to be the last day of the Jyeshtha month according to Hindu Panchang. After this, the month Ashadh month begins.

Procedure of Purnima Vrath(fast)
On the day of Jyeshtha Purnima, make a resolution of the fast and have a bath in a sacred river or watercourse in the Brahm Muhurt. Do greet the Lord Varun before taking the bath. After the bath, chant the Surya Mantra and give argh to Lord Surya. Worship Lord Madhusudan and offer Naivedya after that. In the end, do charity and donate to the Brahmins as per your strength. In the evening, offer water to the Moon and take your food.

Jyeshtha Purnima Upay
  1. According to beliefs, offering milk mixed with sugar and rice grains to the moon at the time of moonrise while chanting the Chandra Mantra, results in getting rid of all the financial problems.
  2. Offer milk mixed with honey to the moon on the Jyeshtha Purnima day to fulfill all your wishes.
  3. On the Jyeshtha Purnima day, offer 11 shells(kaudiyan) to Goddess Laxmi, apply turmeric tilak on them and keep them in your locker the next day. It is believed that by doing so, one never faces any financial crisis in life.
  4. It is believed that doing Tratak with the moon on the Jyeshtha Purnima day helps in improving eyesight.
  5. One should also worship Maa Laxmi on the Jyeshtha Purnima day. According to beliefs, this results in getting rid of all the problems and hardships.
  6. It is believed that Maa Laxmi always showers her blessings on the one who offers sweetened water and keeps sweets under the Peepal tree on the Jyeshtha Purnima day.
Significance of Jyeshtha Purnima
It is believed that bathing in Ganga or any other sacred river, early morning on the Jyeshtha Purnima day, results in getting freed from all your sins. If you are unable to go to any sacred river due to the ongoing Pandemic, then you can even mix the Gangajal with water at your home and bath while chanting this mantra ( Gangge Ca Yamune Cai[a-E]va Godaavari Sarasvati | Narmade Sindhu Kaaveri Jale-[A]smin Sannidhim Kuru), it is also considered to be equally fruitful.

Meaning of the Mantra:
O Holy Rivers Ganga and Yamuna, and also Godavari and Saraswati, O Holy Rivers Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri; Please be Present in this Water (and make it Holy).
Vat Savitri Vrath is kept on Jyeshtha Amavasya all over the country, likewise, Vat Purnima Vrath is kept on Jyeshtha Purnima across the country (mainly in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Southern India).
