Story of Karva Chauth fasting
 
According to the Puranas, a Brahmin had 7 sons and an only daughter, whose name was Veeravati. When this girl became eligible for marriage, she was married to a boy from a Brahmin family. After marriage, when she was living with her parents then Veervati kept the fast of Karva Chauth for the long life of her husband. During this, Veervati gets distraught with hunger, her brothers get worried seeing this condition of Veervati, she was getting out of her senses, only then all the brothers together make a plan. One of the brother goes away and climbs a tree and lights a lamp. The second brother tells Veervati that the moon has come out, she breaks the fast by worshiping that lamp, when she sits down to eat, she sneezes as she takes the first bite of the food, and then in second, and third. Sneezing during a pooja or during an auspicious task is considered inauspicious. Soon Veervati receives the message of her dying husband. Her sister in law reveals the fact that because she did not observe Karva Chauth fast with full devotion, the deities got angry. After this, Indrani, the wife of Indra Dev, once again comes to earth and tells Veervati to keep the fast of Karva Chauth with full rituals and reverence. After keeping the fast Veervati's husband becomes alive, from that day the fast of Karva Chauth is kept.

Get up early in the morning, take bath, after taking bath, collect the material of worship. And take a vow of waterless fast in the morning. Worship the idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati with full devotion and sincere heart. Get ready with full sixteen makeup. While worshiping Lord Shiva at night, offer flowers and sweets in the form of prasad. Light a lamp in front of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and also offer makeup to Mother Parvati, and while worshiping, do read the story of Karva Chauth, then wait for the moon to emerge. After the moon comes out, offer water to the moon through karva, after that see the moon once and see your husband's face once with the help of a sieve and after following these steps, take water from your husband's hand and then break the fast.
