The Significance of Mithun Sankranti
Mithun Sankranti is also known as Asharh or Aani in Sothern India and Mithunam Onth in Kerala. On this day the sun transits from Taurus to Gemini. This change of the Sun’s position is considered to be crucial in astrology. Hence, people perform puja on this day. Mithun Sankranti is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in Odisha where the festival is known as Raja Parba.The festival lasts for four days where people welcome the rain with joy and happiness. Unmarried girls get dressed in beautiful traditional clothes and ornaments. Married women take a break from household chores. People sing the Raja gita, a popular state folk song of Odisha. Men and women walk barefoot to welcome the rain and a lot of dancing and singing takes place.
Mithun Sankranti Puja Vidhi - On this day Silbatta is worshiped as Bhudevi. It is bathed with milk and water on this day. After this, sandalwood, vermilion, flowers and turmeric paste are offered on the Silbatta. Now on the day of Mithun Sankranti, homage is paid to the ancestors. On the day of Mithun Sankranti, sweet poda-peetha made of jaggery, coconut, rice flour and ghee is made. It is said that rice is not accepted in any form on this day.
Hindus also believe in fasting on Mithun Sankranti to please the Sun God. It is believed that fasting on Raja Parba or Mithun Sankranti to please the God Sun ensures prosperity, peace, and happiness in life. Bathing from Holy water is considered sacred on this day. The temple of Lord Jagannath in Odisha is decorated and large number of devotees come to worship the Lord and his wife Bhudevi (Goddess Earth).
Another common ritual of Raja Parba is to tie swings on banyan trees. Girls of all ages enjoy themselves swinging and singing on it. There are different kind of sets of swing that are used like ram doli, dandi doli and chakri doli. It is said that Mithun Sankranti is very auspicious for donating clothes to the needy people. Like all other Sankranti festival, it is considered sacred to pay homage to the ancestors on this day and many people visit the temples on riverbanks to perform it.
