Skandamata is the goddess who created the new consciousness in the worldly creatures by living on the mountains. She is also known as Skandamata because of the Goddess of Skanda Kumar Kartikeya. On the fifth day of Navratri, first of all, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Then keep the picture or statue of Skandamata on the post in the temple or place of worship of the house. Purify with Gangajal, then take water in an urn, put some coins in it and keep it on the post. Now take a vow of worship. After this, apply Roli-Kumkum to Skandamata and offer Naivedya. Now take out the aarti of the Goddess from the incense-lamp and after the aarti, distribute the prasad to all the people of the house and you should also accept it. Skanda Mata likes white color, so you should offer bananas to the Goddess by wearing white-colored clothes. It is believed that by doing this the Goddess blesses her to be healthy.

Story of Goddess Skandamata:
As per stories, there was a demon named Tarakasur. He did severe penance to please Lord Brahma. Seeing his severe penance, Brahma ji was very pleased. He was pleased and gave darshan to Tarakasur. Pleased with that harsh penance, Brahma Ji came in front of him. Asking Brahma Ji for a boon, Tarakasur asked to make him immortal. Brahma Ji explained to him that he who is born must die. Then Tarakasura got frustrated and asked Brahma Ji that the Lord should make him die at the hands of Shiva's son. He said this because he used to think that if Shivaji will never get married then how will he have a son. Therefore he will never die. Then he started inflicting violence on the people. Everyone was troubled by his atrocities.
Everyone got upset and reached Shivaji. He prayed to Shiva to free him from Tarakasura. Then Shiva married Parvati and became the father of Kartikeya. After growing up, Kartikeya killed Tarakasur. Skandamata is the Goddess of Kartikeya.Kartikeya is also called the Kumar commander of the gods. Kartikeya is also known in the Puranas by the names Sanat-Kumar, Skanda Kumar, etc. In this form, the Goddess rides on a lion and kills the tyrannical demons. Being the daughter of Parvatraj, she is also called Parvati, and being the wife of Lord Shiva, she also has the name Maheshwari. She is also called Gauri because of her fair complexion. Goddess has more love for her son, hence she is called Skandamata who loves her son very much. Goddess is in Abhaya posture, seated on a lotus flower, hence she is also called Padmasana Devi and Vidyavahini Durga.
