Chaitra Navratri has started with the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. People are engaged in worshiping Goddess Rani by installing urns in temples as well as in homes all over the country. Now nine forms of Maa Durga will be worshiped for the next nine days. Those who fast during Navaratri only consume only fruits or grains of fasting. But those who do not fast, they also eat only satvic food during these nine days, and even eating non-vegetarian food is forbidden to eat onion garlic. Food is divided into 3 categories

It is forbidden to eat onion garlic not only during Navratri, but in any type of fasting or puja lesson. Before knowing what the reason behind this is, let us tell you that food in Ayurveda is divided into three categories-
 
  • Satvik: qualities like peace of mind, sobriety, and purity
  • Rajasik: Qualities like passion and happiness 
  • Tamasic: Qualities like egoism, anger, passion, and destruction
 1. Onion and garlic are vindictive foods

Onion and garlic are classified as tamasic food. According to the scriptures, vegetables like onion and garlic promote passion, passion and ignorance which hinders the path of the unrighteous. Therefore, people who are not fasting during the nine days of Navratri should also stay away from Rajasic and Tamasic food and should eat only satvik food.

2. Eating onion-garlic can cause a person to deviate from the path of devotion

According to religious beliefs, the devotee needs spiritual energy to worship the Goddess during the nine days of Navratri. But after eating things like onion and garlic, heat in the body increases, due to which many kinds of desires are born in the mind and a person can deviate from the path of worship. Apart from this, sleeping during the day is also prohibited at the time of fasting, but the body feels lethargic after eating things like onion, garlic. This is the reason why onion and garlic are not eaten during the 9 days of Navratri.
 
What is the legend related to this?

The most famous legend behind not eating onion and garlic is associated with Rahu Ketu. Two demons Rahu and Ketu also sat there when Vishnu Lord was distributing the nectar that came out of the ocean churning, Mohini as a god. The god also gave him drops of nectar as a deity, but then the Sun and Moon told him that these two are demons. Lord Vishnu immediately beheaded both. By this time the nectar had not come down from their throats and since the nectar had not reached their bodies, they fell and fell on the ground at the same time, but nectar had reached the face of Rahu and Ketu, so both the demons' faces became immortal .
 
 3. Onion and garlic are considered impure.

When the head of Rahu and Ketu were beheaded by Lord Vishnu, a few drops of nectar from their severed heads fell on the ground from which onions and garlic were produced. Since both these vegetables are derived from drops of nectar, they are similar in destroying diseases and microbes, but since they have fallen through the face of demons, they have a strong smell and are considered impure and are never offered to God.
