On the day of Ekadashi, popularly known as Hari Vasar, Vedic rituals, fasting, havan and yagya etc, should be done. It is believed that worship performed on this day bears more fruit than normal days. The day of Ekadashi is very auspicious for getting blessed by one’s ancestors. Papmochani Ekadashi is also one of the 24 Ekadashis that comes in a year. We worship Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi, who destroys sins. On this day, along with condemnation and evil, one should also avoid the use of bad words. The word mochani in the word papmochani means expulsion.
To rid one's sins, worship performed on this day is of significant benefit. Faithful worship on this day destroys the sins of both the past and present birth. Like all other Ekadashis, this day is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Papmochani Ekadashi, which comes every year on the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi, falls in the month of Chaitra, during which the worship of the quadrilateral form of Lord Shri Vishnu ji is best. The total number of Ekadashis can change because of more months in the Hindu calendar, but this Ekadashi is celebrated only on the day of Krishna Paksha Ekadashi, which comes in the month of Chaitra.
Papmochani Ekadashi comes after Holika Dahan, and after this Ekadashi, the festival of Chaitra Navratri begins. Papmochani Ekadashi, which falls on the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month, is the last of the 24 Ekadashis.
In the year 2022, Papmochani Ekadashi will be held on Monday, March 28. The fast observed on this day is the best among all the fasts, because of which a person becomes free from all sins. Bathing in holy rivers on this day is very auspicious. On this day, one should fast and worship on the specified date and auspicious time according to the Hindu calendar.
In the year 2022, the date of Ekadashi will start at 06:04 pm on Sunday, March 27 and will end the next day at 04:15 pm on Monday, March 28.
The duration of Parana Muhurta of Papmochani Ekadashi will be 2 hours 28 minutes on 29th March, in which the Parana Muhurta will start at 06:16 am and end at 08:44 am.
The worship and fasting done keeping these Muhurtas in mind bear many times more fruit than normal and Lord Shri Vishnu also gets appeased soon and blesses his devotees. Parana Muhurta on Dwadashi is the most auspicious time for devotees to break the fast. Therefore, the fast opened in the auspicious time of Parana is complete.

Mythological fasting story of Papmochani Ekadashi -
Once, on being asked by Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, Lord Shri Krishna told the story, timing and reasons related to the fast. It is said that Shri Krishna told Arjuna this story. Along with this, Brahma ji, the father of the universe, had also told Devrishi Narad ji about the law of this Ekadashi.
According to the story, the meritorious sage, son of Chyawan Rishi, was a great worshipper of Lord Shiva. He lived his life by doing severe penance, praying to appease Lord Shiva. He had selected a beautiful forest named Chaitrarath for his penance.
Seeing his penance, Lord Indra disturbed him so that he could not attain a higher place than him in heaven. Indra attempted to distract the admirable sage. But he could not succeed.

After that, Indra sent an Apsara named Manju Ghosha to disturb the penance of the laudable sage. Despite the many efforts of the Apsara, the sage didn’t lose his attention. Apsara was a devotee of Shiva. So, Kamadeva helped Manju Ghosha aim his mighty bow at the devoted sage, after which the sage fell in love with that Apsara and lost all his concentration. Thus, falling in love, he wasted 56 years of time.

After a long time, Manju Ghosha sought permission from the meritorious sage to go back to heaven, due to which the sage realised that they had deceived him. His penance had been broken, and he realised his mistake. Learning of this, the sage became furious, and he cursed Manju Ghosha to become ugly. In this way, the Apsara also realised her mistake by losing her beautiful form. She fell to his feet and begged for forgiveness.

After many efforts, the sage gave up his anger and talked about the fast coming on the day of Ekadashi of Chaitra month Krishna Paksha and told her if she followed the rituals and keep the fast with full rituals, then she would be free from the curse and as told by the sage, she attained her former form.

After this time, the meritorious sage went to his father's ashram and told him about the whole incident. On hearing this, his father Chyawan Rishi told him to observe this Papmochani Ekadashi fast. In this way, the sage got rid of his sin by observing the fast and following the rules, and Manju Ghosha became free from the curse.

Significance of Papmochani Ekadashi in Hinduism

A little water and fruits can be taken at one time of the day. Donations should be made on this day and the poor and Brahmins should be fed with respect.
