What are these three debts?
It is said in the ancient scriptures that with the birth of every human being, he has to pay the three types of debts. The first one is Dev loan; the second loan is Rishi loan and the third loan is Pitru loan. It is believed that a person who does not clear these three debts has to face many kinds of sorrows and anguishes.
Dev debt can be removed by worshiping, archana and eulogy of all the gods. Rishi's debt can be removed by propagating and spreading Vedas and Shastras and our scriptures give the opportunity to bring down the third of these debts in Pitru Paksha.

The Mahalaya Paksha
In fact, Pitru Paksha is an occasion to pay respect and reverence to one's ancestors. Every year from the full moon of Bhadrapada to the new moon of Ashwin's Krishna Paksha, that is, all the scriptures of Pitrupaksha are performed in a total period of 15 days.
This Paksha is also called Mahalaya and in this Paksha Shradh is performed for the ancestors.
This debt is paid from this side of the world
The ancestors are pleased by making water, sesame, rice, barley and Kush pinds or by performing Shradh for them only in a sankalpika method, by taking out Gau Grass and by giving food to the Brahmins for their sake and their happiness. This gives freedom from the debt of the ancestors.
It is said in Skanda Purana that 'Yat Shraddhaya Diyate Tat Shradham' means that which is given with reverence for the ancestors is called Shradh. On this day, a Brahmin who performs the rituals of Shradh for the ancestors should take blessings after offering food and appropriate dakshina after Shradh etc.
