Jivitputrika Vrat Katha

According to the legend, once upon a time, there lived a vulture (Garuda) and a fox on a tree. When both of them saw some women doing Jitya fast, then the idea of fasting Jitiya also came into their mind. Both of them took a vow to worship according to law by keeping a fast in front of Lord Shri Jiutvahan. But on the day Jitiya was fasting, a big businessman of the village died on the same day. Seeing his corpse, he got greedy. The fox could not stop himself and ate food secretly and his fast was broken.

On the other hand, Garuda followed the fast and fulfilled it. As a result, both were born in the next life as an eagle, elder sister Silavati and fox, younger sister Kapuravati to a Brahmin. One by one seven boys were born to Chil Sheelvati. Whereas all the children born to the fox would die a few days after birth. All the boys of Shilavati grew up and started working in the court of the king. Kapuravati got a feeling of jealousy on seeing them, she asked the king to cut off the heads of all the sons and got them seven new utensils and kept them in them and covered them with red cloth and sent them to Shilavati. Seeing this, Lord Jiutvahana made the heads of the seven brothers out of clay and sprinkled nectar on them by connecting the heads of all of them to his torso. This brought them to life.
