Guru Purnima is celebrated in India in respect of gurus and our teachers. The word 'gu' means darkness (ignorance) and the word 'ru' means light knowledge. The one who destroys ignorance is the light of Brahma, that is the Guru. On this day, not only the Guru but whoever is elder in the family should be considered equal.
This day is celebrated to thank and offer our prayers and respect to our teachers for all of their knowledge given to us, which helped us in shaping our lives. Even in the scriptures itself, the place of the Guru is said to be equal to that of God, because it is the Guru who increases the knowledge of the person. It is only by the path and knowledge shown by the Guru that a person climbs the ladder of success by removing all the darkness coming in his life from time to time. That is why the importance of Guru Purnima also increases.
