According to the Panchang, Pitru Paksha, 2021 will start on 20 September, 2021 on Monday. It will begin from the full moon of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. Pitru Paksha will end on 6th of October, 2021 i.e., Wednesday, on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. The general methods regarding how to do tarpan and pind daan for ancestors during Shradh Paksha is described below.

What is tarpan :
 The act of gratifying is called tarpan. The act of offering salvation to our ancestors is called Shradh and the act of offering Tandul or sesame mixed water is called Tarpan.
 
Types of tarpans:
 
There are 6 types of tarpans
  • Dev-Tarpan
  • Rishi-Tarpan
  • Divya-Man-Tarpan
  • Divya-Pitru-Tarpan
  • Yama-Tarpan
  • Man-Pitr-Tarpan

How to perform Tarpan:  Pitru and pind daan
1. After bathing in the holy river, during Pitru Paksha, in the names of ancestors’ offerings are made on the bank itself. For this, the ancestors are offered water with chanting a special mantra by putting barley, black sesame and a red flower, facing the south direction. 
2. First of all, take pure water, big plate or tamran (copper plate), raw milk, rose flowers, flower-garlands, Kusha, betel nut, barley, black sesame, Janeu and do aachman for three times. Say Om Keshavay Namah, Om Madhavay Namah, Om Govinda Namah. 
 3. After Aachman, wash your hands and sprinkle water on yourself, that is done to become holy, then tie the crest with Gayatri Mantra, apply tilak and wear the sacred (making a ring) of Kusha on the ring finger and take water, betel nut, coin, flowers and take the following resolution. 
4. Pronounce your name and gotra and then say, “Srutismritipuranokta karisheya devarshimanushya pittarpanam for attainment of peace”. 
5. After this, put water, raw milk, rose petals in the plate, then take rice in hand and invoke the deities and sages. Sit facing east, offer tarpan from Devtirtha i.e., with the tip of the fingers of the right hand, in the same way offer tarpan to the sages.
6. Now facing north, wearing the thread (like a garland) and wearing a palanquin, offer tarpan to the divine man by pouring water from the middle of both the palms. Water is offered to the deity with the fingers and the ancestors with the thumb. 
7. After this, sit facing the south, put the thread on the right shoulder and take it under the left hand. Now leave the black sesame in the plate, again take black sesame in the hand and invoke your ancestors by chanting - Pitra imam grhantu jalanjalim in fire. Then offer tarpan from Pitru Teerth i.e., from the middle part of thumb and forefinger. 
8.While performing the tarpan, say with the name of your gotra, ‘Gotre asmatpitamaha (father's name) vasurupat tripyatamidam tilodakam ganga jalam va tasmai swadha namah, tasmai swadha namah, tasmai swadha namah.’ Give water to the ancestors thrice with this mantra. Similarly, give water after taking the names of three generations. After reciting this mantra, give Jalanjali 16 times in east direction, 7 times in north direction and 14 times in south direction.
9.Those whose names are not remembered, pronounce the names of Rudra, Vishnu and Brahma ji. Offer water to the Sun. Then give incense of jaggery-ghee on the candle, take out five bhog after the incense which is called Panchbali. 
10. After this, take water in hand, leave this at the feet of Lord Vishnu by saying ‘Om Vishnuve Namah’ for three times. Your ancestors will be very happy with this karma and their wishes will be fulfilled.

Pind Daan

The meaning of pind daan - Take cooked rice, cow's milk, ghee, jaggery and honey and mix it to make round. Wear the thread on the right shoulder and face south. This offering to the ancestors is called Pind Daan. It is a religious belief that the ancestors are satisfied for a long time with the offerings made of rice.
The first three represents, the three generations i.e., father, grandfather and great-grandfather. If the father is alive then the names of grandfather, great-grandfather and great-grandfather's father are formed.
 
1.White clothes are worn while doing Tarpan or Pind Daan and this has to be done only in the afternoon. 
2. First prepare the pind and then worship it with rice, sweets, flowers, barley, sesame and curd. Light incense sticks while worshiping. 
3. Donate Pind Daan for at least three generations. 
4. Take the pind in hand while chanting this mantra, release the pind from the middle of the thumb and index finger after 'Idam pind (take the name of the ancestor) tebhya: swadha'. 
5. After performing Pind Daan, pray to the ancestors and also Aryama, the God of ancestors. 
6. Now immerse them in the holy river.
7. After Pind Daan, perform Panchabali Karma. That is, feed five living beings
