Singh Sankranti 2021: When is it, Significance and Rituals

The word Singh Sankranti can be divided into two parts – Singh and Sankranti. Singh is also spelled as Sinha or Leo, also known as Leo which is an astrological zodiac sign represented by Leo. Sankranti is the occasion that marks the passage of the Sun from one zodiac sign to another. During the festival of Simha Sankranti, the Sun is in transit from Cancer to Leo. In southern India, Singh Sankranti is also known as Singh Sankranti and this festival is celebrated with more enthusiasm and fairness in southern and northern parts of India than in other parts of the country. This year Singh Sankranti will be celebrated on 17th August 2021.

 Rituals of Singh Sankranti:

  On the occasion of Simha Sankranti, devotees worship Lord Vishnu himself, the Sun God, and Lord Narasimha Swamy.

 Narikela (coconut) abhishekam is performed on this day and people consider it a part of the holy bath. People use only fresh coconut water for Nariyal Abhishek.

 The Huvina Puja celebrated concerning Lord Vishnumurti is observed continuously for a month until the Sun enters the Virgo sign (piece).

 On the occasion of Simha Sankranti, flowers, fruits, and various types of sweets are offered to the deities and specific mantras are chanted to seek blessings.

 Significance of Singh Sankranti

 The importance of Singh Sankranti has been justified by all from the Vedic, astrological and religious points of view. Therefore, Hindus, especially Brahmins, consider this festival to be an important Hindu event. Even though the festival of Singh Sankranti is mainly celebrated in the southern states of India, it is also celebrated in a grand manner in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is believed that during the reign of the Chand dynasty, craftsmen used to showcase their creativity, products on the occasion of Singh Sankranti. He was suitably rewarded by the king for his creativity, talent, and hard work. The common people started appreciating this act of the king and became a part of the celebration and started offering fruits and flowers to the members of the royal family.
