People pray to ask God for materialistic things and when these desires are not fulfilled, it results in sorrow. Everyone should avoid such desires.
There is a story of a great philanthropist Ramkrishna Paramhans. He had cancer in the throat which gave him immense pain. He was suffering a lot because of it but avoided to tell anyone about it. People were aware of the sufferings and pain that he used to bear.

When Paramhans ji’s problem increased, he started sitting with closed eyes and avoided speaking a word to anyone. His devotees used to tell him repeatedly that he was so close to Goddess Kali and that she listened to all his prayers.
They requested him to ask to Goddess Kali to cure his disease and make him healthy. They continuously insisted him to ask for his good health to god and they were sure that Mother Goddess will do it for Paramhans ji.

Paramhans ji told his devotees not to tell him to ask these things from the Mother Goddess. He told them that he could not meditate and pray to Mother Goddess to take away his pain and disease. The relationship between him and the goddess is eternal and she knows it well what to give me as she is the mother. He has been given this disease then there must be some good reason for it. She will do whatever she feels right for him and he would be fool if he questions their system. He will just pray to her like he always do and have faith in the Mother Goddess.

Moral: With this story, here comes the lesson that before asking god for something we should be very cautious. Ask for only those things which only god can give you. Whatever the situations may be, either good or bad must be accepted for god has given them to us.
Most of us desire for materialistic things which remains unfulfilled. Unfulfilled desires always result in misery. Therefore, it is always better to stay away from such desires.
