Diwali is a festival of lights and happiness.  Everyone eagerly waits for this festival.  On Diwali, the whole house is cleaned and decorated.  Along with this, the whole house is filled with the light and diyas.  Maa Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshiped on this day.  It is said that Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, enters the house on this day.  Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped on this day for wealth and peace.
 
According to religious stories, Goddess Lakshmi had arrived from the churning of the ocean on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month.  According to another belief, this day is also known as birthday of Goddess Lakshmi.  In some places this day is celebrated as the birthday of Goddess Lakshmi.

On the other hand, Lord Ganesha is a symbol of wisdom and mother Lakshmi is of wealth and prosperity.  Worshiping these idols in homes on Diwali brings both wealth and goodwill.
 
According to the scriptures, Maa Lakshmi is considered a symbol of wealth, due to which maa Lakshmi becomes proud of it. Lord Vishnu  wanted to end this pride, so he told Lakshmi ji that a woman is not complete until she becomes a mother.
 
Lakshmi ji had no son, so she was very disappointed to hear this. Then she reached Goddess Parvati.
 
Mother Parvati had two sons, so Lakshmi ji demanded her to adopt a son.  Mother Parvati knew that Lakshmi ji does not stay in one place for long.  So she would not be able to take care of the child, but understanding her pain, she handed over her son Ganesha to her.

Lakshmi Mata was very pleased with this. She announced that for happiness and prosperity, first Ganesh ji will have to be worshipped, only then my worship will be completed.  This is the reason why Lord Ganesha is worshiped along with Goddess Lakshmi on the day of Diwali.
