Sun's Dakshinayan is a symbol of special changes
Two sides have a special place in the Hindu calendar calculation, these two sides are known as Uttarayan and Dakshinayana. According to both these times, a change is also seen in the position of the Sun. According to Hindu scriptures, Uttarayan is the period when the Sun travels from South to North which is also known as Makar Sankranti. Three of the six seasons fall in this Sankranti: winter, spring, and summer. According to the Puranas, Bhishma Pitamah waited for Uttarayan to be free from his life. It is also believed that on this auspicious day, Ganga reached the earth from heaven. Therefore Magh bath is also considered important. All yagyas, tapasyas, marriages etc. are performed during Uttarayan. Also, it is said that Uttarayan is daytime for God and Dakshinayan is a night for him. Dakshinayana includes winter, autumn, and monsoon. During Dakshinayana the sky is filled with clouds. From the point of view of sadhana, Dakshinayana is for purification, and Uttarayan has been the best time for self-knowledge.
Difference between Uttarayan and Dakshinayana
Uttarayan This is the period between Makar Sankranti and Karaka Sankranti. Uttarayan means the speed of the north. It is a period of six months that shows the meaning of the northward movement of the Sun on the celestial hemisphere. During this period the days are longer than the night, the six-month period between the summer solstice and the winter solstice when the Sun travels south on the celestial sphere. It marks the entry of the Sun into Cancer.
