Shankaracharya is the rank of supreme religious leader in Hinduism, equivalent to the Dalai Lama in Buddhism and the Pope in Christianity. There are four Shankaracharyas from the four Maths established in the country by Adi Shankaracharya.

When did Shankaracharya’s post started?

The beginning of this post is believed to be from Adi Shankaracharya. Adi Shankaracharya was a Hindu philosopher and religious leader, who is regarded as one of the greatest representatives of Hinduism. Adi Shankaracharya established four mathas in four regions of India for the prestige of Sanatan Dharma.

The chief among the four mathas was called Shankaracharya. After establishing these mathas, Adi Shankaracharya placed four of his chief disciples on them. Since then, the tradition of the post of Shankaracharya is going on in these four monasteries. Each Math has its own special Mahavakya.
