Shri Giriraj Chalisa is the most popular devotional hymn in praise of Lord Shri Giriraj. Lord Giriraj, a natural form of Lord Krishna, who lifted the hill on his finger to save the lives of Brijwasis. Govardhan Hill also known as Giriraj Parvat is located near Vrindavan in Mathura. Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill on his little finger to save the people from the wrath of the rain by god Indra. Krishna defeated the rain god and thus the villagers were saved. The daily recitation of a forty verse hymn dedicated to Shri Giriraj Chalisa Govardhan Pahari is believed to remove sorrow and bring happiness and opulence in one's life.
Govardhan Shila is a mountain from the Govardhan hill in Braj. Mount Govardhan holds a unique place in Hindu scriptures relating to Krishna, the land called Braj where he was born. Known as Govardhan or Giriraj and being the sacred center of Braj, it is recognized as the natural form of Krishna. Indian classical art favors the image highly, but there are some contrasts in folk worship, early Buddhism, Shiva's Banalinga and Vishnu's Shaligram. They have solar significance, and their use in worship dates back to the Hindu period in India. The stone is usually brown in colour. Govardhan, a very famous place of Hindu pilgrimage, is located 26 km west of Mathura (154 km from New Delhi) at Deeg on the state highway. Govardhan is situated on a narrow sandstone hill known as Giriraj which is about 8 km in length. When Chaitanya Mahaprabhu did a parikrama (parikrama) of the Govardhana mountain during his visit to Vrindavan in 1515 AD, he did not walk on the hill as he did not consider Govardhana separate from Lord Krishna. Hence, traditionally Vaishnavas do not step on the Govardhan hill.
