This temple was built by cutting the tip of a hill on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River, also known as Kalahasti. In the temple, Kalahstishvara lord was consecrated for the air element. In the name Srikalahasti, Sri refers to spider, Kala to snake and Hasti to elephant. It is believed that these three animals worshiped Lord Shiva here and then he got liberation.
