Ekadashi Puja importance and rules
On the day of Ekadashi fast and worship, many rules are kept in mind and worship is done. No matter how big or small the puja is, all devotees should perform it with devotion. At the time of puja, keep rice filled in a copper kalash. Shodashopachar worship of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi is done by making an octagonal lotus. Havan is performed after the puja. It is auspicious to give clothes, donations etc. while eating fruits on this day. Any fast is considered complete only when it is worshiped as per the rituals and donations made during this period complete the fast.

Fasting on this day gives desired results. People observing Ekadashi fast have to follow some important rules a day before Dashami i.e. Ekadashi. From the day of Dashami, devotees should not consume food items like meat, fish, onion, pulses and honey. On both Dashami and Ekadashi, people should follow complete celibacy and stay away from pleasures.

One should wake up early in the morning and take bath, after which a lamp should be lit in the temple of the house. Abhishek of Lord Vishnu should be done with Ganga water. Flowers and basil leaves should be offered to Lord Vishnu. If possible, keep a fast on this day. Aarti should be performed to God and offerings should be made to God. On this auspicious day, worship Lord Vishnu as well as Goddess Lakshmi. Apart from installing the picture or idol of Lord Vishnu, it is best to worship him on this day with various types of fruits, flowers and things.
