This year Govardhan Puja will be celebrated on 26 October. According to Hindu mythology, Govardhan Puja should be celebrated on Pratipada Tithi of Kartik month. Also known as Annakoot Puja, the Govardhan Puja Muhurta for this year is from 06:29 AM to 08:43 AM on 26 October. On this day, Lord Krishna defeated Lord Indra.

Materials required for pooja
The composition of Govardhan Puja includes sweets offered to the deities, incense sticks, flowers and garlands made of fresh flowers, roli, rice and cow dung. 56 types of food items called Chappan Bhog are prepared, and honey, curd and sugar are used to prepare Panchamrit. On Govardhan Puja, Lord Krishna is offered wheat, rice, vegetable made of gram flour and leafy vegetables. Panchamrit made of curd, milk, honey, sugar, dry fruits and tulsi is offered to Lord Krishna and later offered as prasad to the devotees.Annakutta vegetable prepared from many types of vegetables is also made for Lord Krishna.
Govardhan Puja Significance
Govardhan festival has great importance in Indian folk life. The direct relation of man with nature is visible in this festival. This festival has its own belief and folklore. In Godhan i.e. Govardhan Puja, the cow is worshipped, its surface has also been the law of darshan and circumambulation of the mountain named Govardhan. It is told in the scriptures that when Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain on his little finger for seven days to save the Brajwasis from the torrential rain, Gopa and Gopika lived happily in its shadow. On the seventh day the Lord placed Govardhan down and ordered to celebrate Annakoot festival by performing Govardhan Puja every year. Since then this festival started being celebrated as Annakoot.
