Guru Nanak Ji founded the Sikh sect
Guru Nanak Ji was the first Guru of the Sikh community. Guru Nanak Ji was called by many names by his followers. Devotees call him by names like Baba Nanak, Nanakdev and Nanakshah. Guru Nanak Dev had laid the foundation of Sikhism, hence this day holds special significance for the people of the Sikh community. People of the Sikh community celebrate this day as Prakash Parv. Guru Nanak Jayanti is called the festival of light because with his arrival the entire world became illuminated.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji had dedicated his entire life to human service. He even sacrificed his family life and happiness to remove the evils prevalent in society. He traveled far and wide, removing evils and vices from the minds of people removing darkness from people's lives and making them bright. That is why the followers of Nanak Dev consider him as the God and Guru of their life and celebrate his birthday as the festival of light.

There is a special celebration across the country on Guru Nanak Jayanti.
Every year on the day of Kartik Purnima, Prakash Parv is celebrated with great pomp. Preparations begin several days in advance in Gurudwaras across the country. Gurudwaras are decorated with flowers and lights. The chanting of 'Wahe Guru, Wahe Guru' starts within the devotees from the morning itself. Devotees take out Prabhat Pheri early in the morning. Guru's name is remembered everywhere.

After this, Guru Ji's name and kirtan are chanted in Gurudwaras and people also offer Prasad. On this day, people of the Sikh community do charity and service work. People go to Gurudwara and pay obeisance, recite Guruvani and perform Kirtan. Lights are lit all around and groups of devotees all around celebrate the festival of lights.
