The story and significance of Holashtak

A legend related to Holashtak is as follows: the story of Holika-Prahlad. According to legend, King Hiranyakashyap tortured his son Prahlad for eight days to dissuade him from devotion to Lord Sri Hari Vishnu. On the eighth day, Holika, who was the sister of Hiranyakashyap, sat with devotee Prahlad in her lap and got burned, but Prahlad survived. These eight days are considered inauspicious because they include eight days of torture. The Shiva-Kaamdev story is also based on another belief related to this. Parvati, the daughter of Himalaya, wanted her to be married to Lord Bholenath, and on the other hand, the gods knew that only Shiva's son could kill Tarakasura because of Brahma's boon, but Shivaji was engrossed in his penance. Then, at the behest of all the gods, Kamdev took the risk of breaking the penance of Lord Shiva.

He fired the arrow of love, and Lord Shiva's penance was dissolved. Lord Shiva got very angry and opened his third eye. Kamadeva's body was consumed in the flames of his anger. Till the eighth day, Kamdev was engaged in breaking the penance of Lord Shiva in every way. In the end, Shiva got angry and burned Kamdev to ashes on the Ashtami of Phalgun. Later, the gods and goddesses told him the reason for breaking the penance, and then Shiva saw Parvati, and the worship of Parvati was successful, and Shiva took her as his wife. That's why, since time immemorial, the celebration of the victory of true love has been celebrated by symbolically burning lust in the fire of Holi.

The story related to Shri Krishna and the Gopis also holds a special place here. It is said that Holi is not a one-day event but a festival of eight days. Lord Krishna played Holi with the Gopis for eight days, and on the day of Dhulendi, i.e., Holi, he handed over the colourful clothes to Agni. Since then, this festival has been celebrated for eight days.
