All of you must have heard about the unique traditions of many mythological temples of our country and the method of worship there, but have you ever heard that in a temple, as a prasad, salt is offered to the goddess instead of fruit or sweets.  One such temple is in Dumka district of Jharkhand, where devotees offer salt to Mother Goddess.  Situated in Dalahi village of Masaliya block, this holy place, popularly known as the Goddess of Salt, is known as 'Nunbil Mandir'.

Salt is offered by the devotees in the form of prasad to the Mother Goddess who is seated in the Nabil temple.  Apart from Jharkhand, devotees from Bihar and West Bengal come here.  Special worship is done here during the holy days of Navratri.  Not only this, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, an eight-day fair is held in Nunbil Devi temple.

This is the mythological story related to Nunbil Devi. Many types of legends are prevalent about the Nunbil Devi temple.  According to ancient tales, in ancient times, cartmen used to carry bullock carts full of salt sacks. Some cartmen were passing through the way of the Nabil river with a bullock cart filled with sacks of salt.  By the time the man reached the bank of the river, it was night.  All such vehiclemen camped there on the bank of the river.  At night, when everyone sat down to eat, suddenly an old lady appeared.  The old lady was very ugly.  Her body was full of wounds.  The old lady instead of eating food on the banks of the river  asked for salt from the cartmen.  After listening to the old lady, the cartmen reprimanded her and drove her away, but a young driver took pity on the old lady and gave her a pinch of salt.  It is said that the old lady became healthy and beautiful as soon as the salt fell on the palm.  The old lady asked the young car driver to immediately move away from that place.  The old lady told that in a short time there is going to be a severe storm at this place.  The young cartman left the place after obeying the old lady.  After a while a really severe storm hit that place and it started raining heavily.  Soon, the salt loaded on the bullock carts of the rest of the cartmen started melting and turned into a swamp.  It is said that all the rest of the caravan along with their oxen got into the same swamp.  On the very next day of the incident, Fukai Puzhar of nearby Dhobna village reached the same place while grazing cattle.  He got scared seeing the scene there.  From there he  immediately returned.  That night the shepherd had a dream.  In the dream, he saw the incident that happened the night before.  In the dream, he was told that he should go to that place and establish a bedi and worship the goddess with salt and batasha.  On the very next day, the shepherd called the villagers nearby and told everyone about the dream.  With everyone's opinion, he made the pind of the goddess under a huge Sal tree beside the swamp up to the bank of the river and bathed in a hot water pool nearby and offered salt and batasha to the goddess.  Since then the name of this river was Nunbil and the name of the goddess was Nunbudhi.

Devotees and traders come from many states, not only Jharkhand, but thousands of devotees and traders from many states come for the business of selling salt and offering salt to Nunbil Devi.  It is believed that selling salt here brings progress in the life of businessmen.

It is believed that there is a hot water source near the body of Nunbil Devi.  Thousands of people come here and take bath in the hot water pool to wish for freedom from diseases like skin diseases.  It is said that by taking a bath in a hot water tank, the disease of skin patients ends from the root.  On the bank of the river, where Nunbil Devi's pind is, there is still a swamp near it.  There is a hot water source near it.  On the occasion of Navratri, devotees from many states make offerings of salt and batase to Nunbil Devi, expressing their faith here.  A grand fair is also organized here on the occasion of Navratri.
