A mythological story behind this, which has been very popular, relates to the moon. King Daksha married his 27 daughters to the moon. But among all his wives, Moon loved Rohini the most. This made Daksha's other daughters jealous of Rohini, whereas when Daksha came to know about this, he got angry and cursed the moon.
