The mythology of the Somnath Temple, According to beliefs, the moon itself had established the Somnath Jyotirlinga. This is the reason why this shivling is known as Somnath. A mythological story behind this, which has been very popular, relates to the moon. King Daksha married his 27 daughters to the moon. But among all his wives, Moon loved Rohini the most. This made Daksha's other daughters jealous of Rohini, whereas when Daksha came to know about this, he got angry and cursed the moon.
set the moonDaksha cursed the moon, saying that he would slowly die. Later, in order to get rid of this curse, the moon did severe penance to Lord Shiva in Prabhas Kshetra at the behest of Brahmadev. During this time, Chandra Dev established the Shivling and worshipped it. Pleased with the harsh penance of the moon, Lord Shiva freed him from the curse and gave him the boon of immortality. Due to this curse and boon, the moon keeps increasing for 15 days and decreasing for 15 days. On the other hand, after getting rid of the curse, the moon prayed to Lord Shiva to stay in the shivling made by him, and since then, this shivling has been worshipped in Somnath Jyotirlinga.
