Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated a day before Diwali and after Dhanteras. Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali can fall at the same time many times. This Chaturdashi is also known as Chhoti Diwali, Roop Chaudas, Narak Chaudas etc. On this day, there is a tradition of worshipping Yamraj, the god of death.
According to religious stories and beliefs, it is believed that on this day Lord Krishna had killed Narakasura, hence it is called Narak Chaturdashi. Therefore, Lord Shri Krishna is also worshipped on this day for freedom from suffering. Doing some work on the day of Narak Chaturdashi brings auspiciousness. Lighting a lamp for Yama on the day of Narak Chaturdashi is an essential task. You should not leave your house empty on this day and a lamp should be lit in the south direction of the house. By doing this the person gets the happiness of freedom from Yama Pash. If you have to complete any important work then you should put black sesame seeds in the lamp on this day and along with this you should also chant Yama Mantra.
On this day, it is auspicious to worship Goddess Lakshmi at night to maintain prosperity in the house. To avoid untimely death, on the day of Narak Chaturdashi, one should keep a cowry and a one rupee coin in a lamp in the south direction of the house and light it. Doing this prevents untimely death and brings happiness.
