When did the tradition of Shradh start?
The tradition of offering Shradh to ancestors on Pitru Paksha is believed to be from the Mahabharata period. There are mythological stories behind it, which is related to the Mahabharata period itself. It is believed that when the soul of Suryaputra Karna reached heaven after death, he was given a lot of gold instead of food to eat there. Then he asked Indra the reason for this, then he told Karna that while on earth he never did food, charity, tarpan etc. for the sake of his ancestors. Then Karna replied that he did not know anything about his ancestors, so unknowingly he had made this mistake. Then he was sent to earth for 16 days to rectify his mistake. After which he performed Shradh according to the law for the salvation of his ancestors. According to these mythology, since then the tradition of performing Shradh in the 16 days of Pitru Paksha has been going on.
