This place has also been a special place of ancient Shiva devotees and poets. Sri Rameshwar Temple is also known as Ramanathaswamy Temple Jyotirlinga.
The word Ramanathan means that Lord Shiva is the principal deity and lord of Rama. This temple was built by Lord Rama during his visit to South India, after his victory over the demon Ravana. The temple is highly mysterious and every day thousands of devotees come here from all over the country to visit this holy place.

Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga Story
There are beliefs about Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga that it was built by Lord Rama and Goddess Sita out of sand and water. The history of Rameshwaram Ramanathaswamy temple dates back to the Ramayana period. Devotees firmly believe that Lord Rama built and installed this Shivling here. According to legend, Lord Rama and his wife Sita were returning from Lanka after slaying Ravana, who was a Brahmin despite being a demon king.Because killing a Brahmin gives the sin of Adharma and killing Brahman, then Lord Rama wanted to worship Lord Shiva and atone for this act. That is why he sent Lord Hanuman to Mount Kailash to bring the idol of Lord Shiva.

Lord Rama and Sita were staying on the island and when they tried to drink water, a voice reverberated there which tells Lord Rama that he is drinking water without worshiping instead of waiting for Hanuman's return. Then Lord Rama told Sita to make a linga from the sand and water of the seashore. He worshiped Lord Shiva in this form and pleaded for mercy.Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of Jyotirlinga, blessed Lord Rama, and accepted to stay here. Since Lord Rama worshiped the linga, the Jyotirlinga was called Ramanathaswamy, and that place is called Rameshwaram.

Importance of the temple is that there are two lingams in the holy place of the temple- one Ramalingam which was built from sand by Sita ji and the other Vishwalingam which was brought by Hanuman ji. Seeing that Hanuman had brought the Linga from Kailash, Lord Rama also worshiped this Vishwalingam. The entire island and surrounding places of Rameshwaram are in relation to Lord Rama.

According to the beliefs, many incidents of Ramayana took place here, and hence, this place is very important for both Vaishnavas and Shaivas. There are many shrines or holy wells in Rameshwaram, the waters of these wells are believed to have medicinal properties. According to belief, the water of each shrine has a different taste and offers different solutions.
