The story of Lord's being Neelkanth arises out of a very important sequence of events which established the new rules of creation. There are many such mythological stories in Hinduism related to Lord Shiva, in which his character and his works are mentioned in detail. In this, there is a story of his Neelkanth form, which is believed to be related to the churning of the ocean. Despite the war and conflict between the Devas and the Asuras, a task had to be accomplished which was the task of getting the nectar from the ocean. Durvasa Rishi's curse on Indra 

Once Durvasa Rishi and his disciples were going towards Mount Kailash to see Shiva. On the way he met Devraj Indra. Indra had great respect for Durvasa Rishi and his disciples, due to which Durvasa Rishi was very pleased and he gave 'Parijata flower' of Lord Vishnu to Indra. In the pride of wealth and indrasan, Indra placed that Parijat flower on the head of his beloved elephant Airavat. Sage Durvasa became very angry seeing the disdain of Lord Vishnu's flower as a blessing given to Indra. He cursed Devraj Indra to be inferior to Lakshmi.

As a result of the curse of sage Durvasa, Lakshmi left heaven at that very moment and became invisible. With the departure of Lakshmi, gods like Indra became weak. As per the advice of Lord Vishnu, Indra went to the demon king Bali with the proposal of a treaty and told him about the nectar and prepared him for the churning of the ocean. Vasuki Nag was made a rope by setting up a mandrachal in the ocean for churning the ocean. . After that both the sides started churning the ocean to get the nectar. Neelkanth became Mahadev after drinking the Kalkut poison that came out of the churning of the ocean. 

All the gods were churning with great zeal and enthusiasm with the desire to get the demon nectar. Suddenly a terrible poison called Kalakoot came out from the sea. The fire of that poison started burning the ten directions. There was an uproar among all the creatures. All the gods and demons started burning with the flame of that poison and their brightness started to fade. On this everyone together prayed to Lord Shankar. On his request, Mahadev ji drank that poison by keeping it on his palm, but did not let it come down from the gorge. Shiva's throat turned blue due to the effect of that Kalakoot poison. That is why Mahadev ji is also called Neelkanth.
