Lucknow: The capital of Uttar Pradesh celebrates the Tuesdays of Jeth with considerable fanfare. This is the kind of municipal festivity that transcends religion. Hindus and Muslims together commemorate this event in honor of Hanuman. It is stated that ChhatarKuar alias Alia Begum, mother of Saadat Ali Khan, the 6th Nawab of Awadh, erected the ancient Hanuman temple in Aliganj, Lucknow. Sahaja-ud-Begum daula'sChhatarKuar was born into a Hindu household. At the same time, it is stated that Saadat Ali Khan was born on Tuesday, which is why he was known as Mangallu.

During the Ramayana, Hanuman resided in this garden
According to legend, there was once a garden near Hewett Polytechnic in the city where Hanuman visited and remained during the Ramayana period. Hanuman Bari was the name of the garden. Lakshmana and Hanuman are said to have spent the night in this garden on their way to Bithoor to abandon Sita in the wild. It was renamed Islamic Islam Bari under the reign of the Nawabs.

The narrative behind the construction of a temple in this location
SankatMochan Hanuman is supposed to have appeared in Alia Begum's dream. He informed the Begum in his dream that his idol in this garden is an idol. As a result, the statue was discovered a few yards lower when the Begum was later excavated. Begum reverently removed the idol and placed it on an elephant. She wished to construct a Hanuman temple and place a statue in it near BadaImambara. But, despite its best attempts, the elephant was unable to proceed past the current location of the temple and sat there. Shri Hanuman wished to say that the temple should be erected here, and the Begum consented. In such a scenario, the temple was built at this location using government funds. This temple is Aliganj's ancient Hanuman temple. If you go, you'll notice that the moon symbol is still made on the temple now.

What is the significance of BadaMangal?
Let me tell you about the three primary stories that surround the BadaMangal celebrations:
  1. It is reported that many years ago, the city was ravaged by an illness that killed many people. Due to a lack of treatment, many individuals perished. Many people started residing at Hanuman temple out of terror at the time and managed to live. Jetha ruled that month. Bhandara was celebrated every Tuesday in the month of Jeth after that.
  2. A female member of Wajid Ali Shah's household was once terribly unwell, according to legend. His illness was going untreated, and survival appeared impossible. Family members prayed at the temple at the time, and she recovered. That day, too, was Tuesday, and the month was Jyeshtha.
  3. Another legend claims that Jatmal, a Marwari perfume seller, once visited the city. He expected a lot of perfume business in the city of Nawabs, but that did not materialise. His perfume hasn't sold yet. When the Nawab learned of the merchant's disappointment, he purchased all of the perfume. The businessman was so pleased that he had the temple restored and presented him with a silver umbrella. Although it is impossible to know what is genuine and what is false in history, these three reasons have been deemed the most important by the religion, and as a result, the Big Mars celebration began in the city and continues to this day. This celebration incorporates both religions.

The nature of Bhandara evolved over time.
There was a practise of distributing jaggery, gramme, and roasted wheat as the Bhandara began. However, as time passed, potato-puri, jalebi, ice cream, sherbet, pakodas, chowmein, cholebhature, and who knows what else became popular. People were provided cool water and glasses of sherbet in the Bhandara and started offering relief to the people in the heat of the month of Jeth. This Bhandara began to take place on small and large scales around the city. During the Corona outbreak, many Bhandaras became social service organizations.
