Mythological Story:
Nandi Ji`s ancestor, Shilad Muni was a brahmachari. Because of this, it was difficult for their descendants to continue the descendants. But somewhere they were worried to see their ancestors. He did not want to stay in the household ashram. But Shilad Muni did hard penance of Indra Dev for his ancestors and asked him for a boon that a son, who is beyond Birth and Death. Hearing this from Shilad Muni, Indra Dev said to the Muni that I am incapable of such a boon. You do penance of Mahadev, the God of Gods, for this boon.
Because they have the right to give the boon of being free from birth and death. Nandi Ji has been born with the blessings of Mahadev Ji due to the hard penance of Sage Shilad. A few days later, Mahadev sent two of his ganas to Shilad Muni's ashram to meet Shilad Muni. He told Shilad Muni that Nandi's age is short-lived.
When Nandi Ji came to know about this, he went to the forest and started the hard penance of Mahadev in solitude. After some time Mahadev appeared to Nandi. When Mahadev asked Nandi about his wish, Nandi said I want to be with you all my life, I do not want to be separated from you under any circumstances. Hearing such things of Nandi, Mahadev hugged him.
And after that Mahadev gave Nandi Ji the face of the bull and made him his vehicle. Among all the Ganas, Mahadev's most beloved Gana is Nandi Ji. Along with this, Mahadev gave Nandi Ji the boon of being immortal and also blessed that wherever my statue will be installed, it will be mandatory to have Nandi Maharaj right in front of it. If this does not happen, the statue of Lord Shiva is considered incomplete.
