What is the significance of Ghrishneshwar temple?
The importance of the temple is also that by visiting the Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga, one can get the benefit of worshiping all the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is also said that by visiting here, childless people get the happiness of children and happiness and good fortune come in life.

According to the Shiva Purana, several legends are associated with this ancient place of worship:
story of pagoda
The legend of the pagoda states that during his hunt, the king of Verul killed the animals living in the hermitage of the sages. This enraged the sage who cursed the king and his body was covered with worms. Due to the curse, the king wandered in the forest where he consumed the water flowing at this place. As soon as he started drinking the water, the insects miraculously disappeared from his body. At that place the overwhelmed king did severe penance. Pleased with the penance, Lord Brahma blessed the king and created a lake which came to be known as pagoda.

Story of Kumkumeshwar
Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati were residing in the Sahyadri range near the pagoda. One day, when the goddess was about to apply vermilion, she mixed it in the water of the pagoda. Then the vermilion turned into a linga emitting a bright beam of light. This linga came out of vermilion, hence this Jyotirlinga was initially called Kumkumeshwar. But the goddess named it Ghrishneshwar.

Story of Ghushmeshwar
Brahmaveta Sudharam, a Brahmin scholar, and his wife, Sudeha, lived in the southern mountain of Devagiri. They were childless, and a distressed Sudeha persuaded her sister Ghushma to marry Sudharam so that they could have children. Eventually, Ghushma and Sudharam had a son, but Sudeha became jealous of it. The boy grew up to be a handsome young man and he was married. But Sudeha, indulging in feelings of jealousy, killed the boy while he was sleeping and threw the body in a lake.Even in the grief of the death of the child, Ghushma was engaged in her devotion, she used to go to the lake and worship regularly by making a hundred lingas. That day he saw his son coming out of the lake. Then Lord Shiva appeared before him and said that Sudeha had killed his son. Pleased with the devotion of Ghushma, he returned his son and also gave him a boon. Ghushma then requested the Lord to forgive her sister and stay at the same place. The Lord accepted his request and continued to reside there in the form of Jyotirlinga. Therefore, he came to be called Ghushmeshwar or Ghrishneshwar in honor of Ghushma.
