According to ancient scriptures, Goddess Dhumavati is one of the ten main goddesses worshipped in Tantra. Goddess Dhumavati is the seventh of the ten Maha Vidyas. The goddess represents power and darkness. The goddess is worshipped in solitude during the night. Goddess Dhumavati is worshipped to get freedom from extreme poverty. They are also worshipped to free the body from all kinds of diseases. Dhumavati is considered to be the greatest soul among the goddesses. She stands behind other gods and goddesses as their guide.

 Dhumavati is the clouded form of Shakti, she is also known as a widow. She is also called Alakshmi. According to Tantra, Mother Dhumavati is similar to Varaha's incarnation. Goddess Dhumavati is an old widow and is associated with things considered inauspicious and unattractive. The goddess is compared to Goddess Alakshmi, Goddess Jyestha and Goddess Nirti. These three deities are incarnations of negative qualities, but they are worshipped at particular times of the year which is auspicious.
