Why do we celebrate Buddha Purnima?
When Lord Buddha, learned about the violence, sin, and death in his life, then he left all the desires, left his family & free himself from all the responsibilities, and left in search of truth. After that, he came to know the truth. Vaishakh Purnima has a special connection with the major events related to Lord Buddha’s life, so in Buddhism, every Vaishakh Purnima is celebrated as Buddha Purnima.
History of Buddha Poornima
As per the historians, Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini, near Kapilavastu, Nepal, in 563 BC. At that time Kapilavastu was the capital of Shakya Mahajanapada. Lumbini is currently the region of South-Central Nepal. Here Ashoka (the Emperor) built a pillar as a symbol of Lord Buddha in the third century BC. Historians have also acknowledged that the Buddha belonged to the Shakya gotra and his real name was Siddhartha. His father's name was Shuddhodhana, who was the head of Shakya Gana and his mother's name was Maya Devi. Siddhartha died 7 days after his mother's death. After this Siddharth was raised by his stepmother Prajapati Gautami.

Mahatma Buddha was the founder of the Buddha religion. He underwent rigorous penance and practice for years, after which he gained the knowledge under the Bodhi (banyan) tree in Bodh Gaya. Then, with his knowledge, he brightened the whole world. Then he died on Kushinagar on Vaisakh Purnima.
