The month of Shravana is very important for the entire sub-continent of India as it is connected to the arrival of the South-West monsoons. For many Hindus, the month of Shraavana is a month of fasting. Many Hindus will fast every Monday to Lord Shiva and/or every Tuesday to the Goddess Parvati. The holy month of Sawan is going to end soon. The month of Sawan, i.e. Shravan Maas, began on July 25, according to the Hindu calendar. The scriptures have the special importance of Sawan Month. It is considered to be the most auspicious month in religious terms. The word “Raksha Bandhan” means “the thread of protection” in Hindi, whereby sisters pray for their brothers’ long and healthy life by tying a thread around their wrists. The brothers, in turn, pledge to protect sisters for life. Apart from siblings, the Raksha Bandhan ritual is also observed by men and women who are not biological siblings but share the same feeling.
