Know the history of the Naimisharanya shrine of Sitapur.

Naimisharanya or Neemsar Temple is situated on the banks of river Gomti in Sitapur district which is 94 km from Lucknow.  Naimisharan is counted as one of the eight temples of Lord Vishnu who manifests himself and is classified as Swayamvyakta Kshetra and is worshiped inside the temple along with his consort- Lakshmi.

Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Sati, and Lord Shiva are associated with the Naimisharanya temple.  The Naimisharanya temple is described as a temple of 33 Hindu gods and goddesses.  Naimisharanya Misrikh is known as Nimsar, Nimsar, or Nimkhar among the local people.  This shrine is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.  It is located in the city of Sitapur in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.  According to mythology, it is one of the Divya Desams—the 108 temples of Lord Vishnu revered by 12 poet-saints in the Nalayir Divya Prabandham. It is believed that the temple was renovated and rebuilt at different times by the ruling kings of the previous days is done.
Many popular festivals are celebrated on the temple premises such as Rath Yatra and Ekadashi along with the birthday of Lord Vishnu.  According to myths, the sacred Kunda-chakra kund which is situated near this holy temple is associated with the history of this temple.  It is believed that it is a pilgrimage center where people take holy baths on festive occasions to get rid of many ailments and mental stress.

History of Naimisharanya Temple
The deities chose the site of the Naimisharanya temple to establish the religion.  But, Vratasura, a demon was a hindrance.  Therefore, Dadhichi donated his bones to kill the demon.
Vishnu killed Durjaya and his gang of demons.  He also destroyed Gayasur.  His body fell at three places in Bihar's Gaya, Naimisharayan Temple, and Badrinath.
Brahmo Namo Maya Chakra fell here, hence this place is also called Naimisharanya.  Here nemi means the outer surface of the chakra.
The location of Naimisharanya temple is very old.  Here Satrupa and Swayambhu did penance.  He did penance for 2300 years to have Lord Narayana as his son.  Lord Rama performed the Ashwamedha Yagya here.  Ved Vyas put together 6 Shastras, 18 Puranas, and 4 Vedas at this place.  Pandavas and Lord Balarama also visited this place. Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas here.

Importance of Naimisharanya Temple
The temple is very important as Shankaracharya and famous poet Surdas also visited the Naimisharanya temple.
 Also, there are eight swayambhu idols of Vishnu.  These temples are classified as Swayamvyakt Kshetra. And, Naimisharanya Temple is one of them.

A large number of people thronged the Naimisharanya temple on the full moon day.  On this day they take bath in the Chakra Kund located near the temple.  Chakra Kund is a well near the Naimisharanya temple.  According to the belief, the well has started from Vishnu's weapon i.e. his chakra. If the full moon day falls on a Monday; the devotees take a bath in the Chakra Kund.  So, the presiding deity washes away all sins.
