Narali Purnima is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm in Maharashtra and the surrounding Konkani regions. The people of the fishermen community celebrate this festival to avoid unpleasant incidents that happen while sailing in the sea. Puja Rituals During Narali Purnima
On the day of Narali Purnima, Hindu devotees worship Lord Varun. On this occasion, 'coconut' is offered to the Lord of the seas. It is believed that by performing the puja rituals on Shravan Purnima, they can please the Lord and the deity may protect him from all the dangers of the ocean. The 'Upanayana' and 'Yagnopaveet' rituals are among the most important rituals followed.
The month of Shravan is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. On Narali Purnima, devotees also worship Shiva as it is believed that the three eyes of the coconut are a representation of the three-eyed Lord Shiva. Brahmins in the state of Maharashtra who perform 'Shravani Upakarma', observe a fast on this day without consuming any kind of grain. Devotees observe 'Falahar' fast by eating only coconut throughout the day.
As a gesture of gratitude and respect to nature on Narali Purnima, people also plant coconut trees along the coast. After completing the puja rituals, the fishermen go to the sea in their ornate boats. After making a short journey, they return to the shore and spend the rest of the day in celebration. Dancing and singing is the main attraction of this festival. On Narali Purnima, a special sweet dish is prepared from coconut, which is eaten together with family members after offering it to the Lord. Coconut is the staple food of the day and fishermen consume various delicacies made from it.
