The dates consisting from the full moon to the new moon are called Krishna Paksha. Which means that the receding moon after the full moon is indicative of Krishna Paksha till Amavasya.
 
There are some dates in every month named as 
1.Pratipada 2.Dwitiya 3.Tritiya 4.Chaturthi 5.Panchami 6.Shashthi 7.Saptami 8.Ashtami 9.Navami 10.Dashmi 11.Ekadashi 12.Dwadashi 13.Trayodashi 14.Chaturdashi 15.Purnima 30.Amavasya
 
If we differentiate between Poornima and Amavasya, you will find
Purnima comes in Shukla Paksha while Amavasya falls in Krishna Paksha. Poornima comes after Amavasya. When the moon takes its full shape. While Amavasya comes after the full moon. When the size of the moon starts to shrink, fasting on full moon day I. E. on Purnima is also done. While it is good to donate on Amavasya, it is forbidden to do auspicious work on this day, while it is good to do all auspicious work on full moon day.

What to do on Amavasya ?

Taking bath in the river on the day of Amavasya and performing charity and paternity is considered beneficial. It is believed that a person should stay away from bad karma and negative thoughts on Amavasya Tithi. This year there will be a total of 14 Amavasya. Amavasya is also related to lunar eclipse. As we are all aware when the Earth comes between the Moon and the Sun, the Sun's light does not reach the Moon, it is called Chand Eclipse. That's why Chandra is also related to Amavasya.
 
What to not to do on amavasya
On this day, any kind of tamasic items should not be consumed. On this day, alcohol, etc.  also be kept away from intoxication. It can have adverse effects not only on your body, but also on your future. Knowledgeable people say that it is good to remain chaudas, amavasya and pratipada in the before mentioned 3 days.
